“S7VEN” [CHORUS] Here’s a little saying when the path turns black You only live once You can’t come back So anything you do, you put your heart in that There’s no such thing as failure when you start from scratch Here’s a little saying when the path turns black You only live once You can’t come back So anything you do, you put your heart in that There’s no such thing as failure when you start from scratch Yeah , look [VERSE 1] Introspection got Gidds reflecting on many lessons, A kid from Streatham with good intentions but I should mention, I’m stubborn-headed but nonetheless I ain’t missing blessings, A double tick and it’s blue that means I got the message, I’m conflicted but gotta stress it it so depressing, Cause being broke and frustrated ain’t the best combination, No excuse just an open statement, I’m flawed (floored) like home renovations Not sure that’s deodorant fragrance I’m over anxious But there’s valleys and peaks, You’re over zealous one day, Then you’re sad the next week That shit happened to me You gotta balance with ease Stay strong, and balance like a circus trapeze The only option, Cause life is shorter than this roach I’m tossing Rather die enormous than live dormant that’s just how we on it Went broke and set up tracks Macaulay Culkin, I gotta keep it pushing like a door in forward motion, [CHORUS] Here’s a little saying when the path turns black You only live once You can’t come back So anything you do, you put your heart in that There’s no such thing as failure when you start from scratch Here’s a little saying when the path turns black You only live once You can’t come back So anything you do, you put your heart in that There’s no such thing as failure when you start from scratch [VERSE 2] I’m all on my own Got no-one to phone In between a hard place and a rock or a stone Just lost my home Its cold when I walk on the roads Im tryna figure out the options I hold - … and they’re very slim I turned my house to a home, now its derelict I pray wishing for hope ,I’m never settling My way resulted me broke , I had less of it If I change blessings will flow, like its raining in I play to win Cause life’s a gamble Take control, grab the handles, God won’t give me challenges I can’t handle Not here to preach on the tabernacle But it’s not black or white like Michael Jacko It’s pain and a bag of hassle No pain no gain Embedded in my brain I didn’t work this hard to remain the same, My mantra whenever life stress me? Empty whats full, And fill what’s empty - ‘Cause - [CHORUS] Here’s a little saying when the path turns black You only live once You can’t come back So anything you do, you put your heart in that There’s no such thing as failure when you start from scratch Here’s a little saying when the path turns black You only live once You can’t come back So anything you do, you put your heart in that There’s no such thing as failure when you start from scratch

about

“Sankofa” is a word from the Twi language used by the Ashanti people in Ghana, West Africa. It translates to “it is not wrong to go back for what you have forgotten” & derives from the three twi words “San” (return) “Ko” (go) and “fa” (bring/seek/fetch) = “go back and get it”. It represents the idea that you may have to look to the past/your past self to plan for a better future. The underlying message of this EP is gratitude & is shown most strongly in the EP’s centrepiece tracks: ‘Start From Scratch’ & ‘Derelict’.

“Derrick” in Start From Scratch/Derelict placed all his value on all the external things society says you should place value on: (e.g. money/status etc.) and ended up losing himself via his drug habit, only to end up homeless and alone. In spite of all this, he fails to accept that he is ‘homeless’ and feels he is merely somewhere that is ‘a little less like home’.

Home = yourself ∴ Homelessness = losing yourself. In this sense I feel that modern society leads all of us to Derrick’s metaphorical homelessness because we aren’t taught to value internal things (e.g. family, health, gratitude.) over external things (money, people, status, sex etc.). Society creates the illusion that looking at everyone else is better than looking within - we don’t believe we are ‘homeless’ either.

Derrick neglected his internal values in the place of external ones and ended up derelict - like an abandoned house. But all that means is that Derrick needs to ‘go back’ and find value in the things that never left him - there’s no such thing as failure when you start from scratch.
